Second Shooter: Do I need them?

So the question was popped, and now you’re mulling over options for wedding photographers. If you’ve looked at my packages, you may have noticed that all of them include the option to have two photographers – the main photographer (me), and a second shooter. You may be wondering if adding the second shooter option is worth the extra $$$ or may even be questioning what a second shooter is. A second shooter is an additional photographer who is there to cover the wedding as well. I urge you to opt for a second shooter on your big day for many reasons.

The first one is, I’m not the Flash.

Being as I’m not the Flash, it is impossible for me to everywhere at once. If you want photos of the bride and groom both getting ready, they either have to be timed just right so that I can move from one location to the next before the fun begins, OR someone else has to be at the place I’m not. In the scenario where I am the only photographer, I will need to have the groom fake these moments to look candid and miss the real thing. This can sometimes result in photographs that look awkward with forced expressions. You don’t want “forced candids.” By having a second shooter, we can cover more events at one time. If you like candid shots, you absolutely want a second shooter. They will be able to get all of the little moments that are happening behind the scenes.

You want pictures of Aunt Janey’s smile.

During the wedding, I am so focused on getting all the traditional shots that it can be easy for me to miss the candid moments during your ceremony. You know, those moments of Aunt Janey, and Uncle Joe holding each other and smiling as you and your new spouse have your first dance together... the ones that show the emotions of the wedding guests. A second shooter is looking out for these moments. Having a second shooter ensures that you get more of these special memories sprinkled throughout your wedding collection.

You’ll get more creative shots.

You’ll also get more creative shots for the same reason. Second shooters aren’t worried about getting the traditional shots because that is what the main photographer is doing. This frees them to be able to be more creative. They can catch different angles and give you a fresh perspective.

One Word: Backups!

With a second shooter being there, I always have a backup on scene in the event that I get sick or injured. The second shooter will be able to take over for me without skipping a beat, I always make sure my seconds are vetted and fully capable of doing the job. Also, it is also good to have two different cameras shooting the event. In case of a tragedy – for example, a camera is broken or a card gets corrupted – you will still have photos and they won’t ALL be lost or damaged.

Time is money.

You only have me for a limited amount of time. Having a second shooter will ensure that we don’t miss anything. One of us can be shooting the reception details while the other is in cocktail hour getting all of those candid moments and the guest’s wild dance moves.

Conclusion.

In conclusion, adding the second shooter option to your photography package when you book a wedding, is a great idea. Even if you don’t book your wedding with Taylor Gautreaux Photography, I urge you to discuss the option with your photographer of choice. It is well worth the money for the added security and additional images that the second shooter can provide.
